Audi claim retro ain’t their style
In recent times, manufacturers have referenced design cues from past cars to revive products or to simply help aid sales (e.g. Ford Mustang, Dodge Challenger, etc.). American automakers seem to be more keen on the idea, especially since it was the early years which were golden for them. But Audi’s design chief, Stefan Sielaff, claims that Audi will not follow suit. “Doing retro is a dangerous game, because you will always have the problem that as soon as you have done such a retro car, you have to think of the next generation, and the generation after that… you can’t get out of it. It will always be close to what you have been doing before.”
I agree with Sielaff to a certain degree; however, I do think there are ways to utilize retro design elements without moving your design language backwards. What do you think?
