RaceRoom Kuwait’s first tournament kicks off!
This past week witnessed the first racing event of RaceRoom Kuwait’s three week simulator tournament. No other word could describe it but “awesome”!
To my surprise the venue was packed! I even saw a few familiar faces from the GulfRun events. That provided very little comfort from a competitive perspective considering most of these guys spend a lot of time driving on real circuits.
The real highlight for me (and I’m sure many others) was a little 9-year old who had us all questioning our driving abilities. His steering and throttle inputs were silky smooth and his lap times were consistent. He was driving that thing like a seasoned pro!
So the event kicked off with a briefing on the rules and regulations of the competition. This particular day would see every driver compete in two races, inclusive of a qualifying session for each, staged at the UK’s Brands Hatch Indy Circuit. We were also told that we would contest both races in a Mini Cooper S racecar.
RaceRoom Kuwait has 6 simulators in total. Considering there are 18 drivers signed up to the competition, the organizers randomly placed us into 3 groups of 6 drivers. The drivers that finished 1st and 2nd from each group were then placed into a new group for the following race. The same was done for the 3rd and 4th place drivers, and so on and so forth. This made things really interesting as it ensured that drivers with similar standings would face each other in the second race of the day.
The races were intense! Simply being quick was not going to cut it. Drivers needed to be consistent with their lap times, as well as staying sharp and focused to avoid running off the circuit or into other competitors. I was actually sweating profusely!
But at the end of the day, there could only be 3 competitors to climb the podium. I placed third overall for the day, but I wasn’t able to stick around for the mini-ceremony unfortunately. A really close friend of mine (who absolutely surprised me with his skills during our race) thankfully represented me. All in all, it was a great time. The room was buzzing with nerves and excitement and that made it all the more special.
The second race takes place this week, but this time there’s a twist. We’re racing an open-wheel Formula Master racecar at the Okayama Circuit in Japan. I can’t wait!
